Announcing the Tree Map

posted Jun 14, 2009, 9:27 PM by Dan McDaniel

Hello Fellow Geocachers!

We just put together a new way of visualizing the community and we call it the Tree Map.  It's not a map of the world with little dots on it, we've already got one of those.  This is a logical map that shows the tree in a new light, so to speak.  It's bright, it's bold, and it shows the entire tree in a smaller package.  Granted, there's still some work yet to do, but this map will certainly help to reduce the scroll time when exploring the tree.

We hope you enjoy it and that you'll help keep these great things coming by visiting a sponsor.

Thanks for your enthusiasm, encouragement and support,

Caching Tree

1000 Leaves

posted May 30, 2009, 10:06 PM by Dan McDaniel

Fellow Geocachers,

Today the CachingTree hits a milestone of sorts, 1000 entries on the tree.  Of course we're no way near our goal of mapping the entire community, but this is a day to celebrate.  It's been just 60 days since we started the project and the response from all of you has been so overwhelmingly positive, we can't imagine stopping.

Thanks for your continued support and for spreading the word about the project.  It's been an amazing ride so far and it's only going to get better!

First Donation

A HUGE thanks to sheppardnik for supporting Caching Tree with a donation.  The following quotes are from the donation message (used with permission of course):

"Thanks for taking on this project - it's one I've dreamed of doing myself!
"You took it to the next level... good luck and cache on!"

"Geocachers are family so drop a donation and help your Uncle Dan!"

I must say, I agree!

Now sheppardnik has a special Green entry on the tree.  (Aren't you jealous?)  We'll all you have to to catch up is follow that sound advice and make a donation.  You may not think your contribution is very much, but it helps keep things running around here.  Even if you can't give financially, you can still help out by visiting a sponsor, buying a button, or even just spreading the word about Caching Tree to others (and encouraging them to make a donation, of course :)

That's about all for now.  Thank you all very much for your continued support and don't forget to keep on cachin'!

Wow, this is amazing!  This week, Caching Tree, The Geocaching Pedigree Project, was featured on PodCacher, one of the most well known and longest running geocaching podcast on the Internet, and visitors from around the world are adding their info to the tree.  Our biggest thanks to Team Geo-Rangers for telling Sunny and Sandy about our project and to PodCacher for the spot on the show.

Be sure to visit or subscribe to their Podcast on iTunes.

Dear Fellow Geocachers,

I'm happy to announce that we are now accepting donations.  If you are interested in becoming a donor, please click on one of the links to the lower left of the window.  You can choose a one time donation of your choice or a recurring annual contribution of $10.  Either way, you're entitled to a special donor listing, a green spot on the pedigree chart, and discounts on any goods we decide to sell in the future.

Thanks to all who support the site either monetarily or otherwise.  We couldn't do it without you!

Backend Maintenance

posted May 7, 2009, 10:10 PM by Dan McDaniel

In order to improve the overall performance of the site and fix inconsistencies in the tree, some changes to the back-end structure of the website were needed.  We're now better equipped to receive data and better able to display it properly as evidenced by the charts.  There's also the added benefit of having a users story displayed if you hover your mouse pointer over their name.  It's still a work in progress, but it's got potential.

Keep your comments coming in, they've been very helpful.  Thanks for your support!

Charts Updated

posted May 3, 2009, 12:10 AM by Dan McDaniel

Dear Fellow Geocachers,

I just got finished updating the pedigree chart, and I think you'll like the results.  Now you have the option to display the chart in three different sizes, plus the charts all use 100% of the browser window, which means less scrolling and more fun.  Probably the most significant change is the addition of hyperlinks in the chart that will take you to a users profile page on  So here you have it!  Let me know if you aren't able to view the chart in these new formats.

Thanks for your participation and support,

New Website!

Dear Fellow Geocachers,

It's been a whopping one month since I started the Geocaching Pedigree Project, and it's grown into something much more than I though it would.  With over 350 registrants in the first 30 days, I'm sure that the project has a bright future ahead of itself.

This new site gives us more capacity and greater flexibility so that the project can continue to grow for years to come.  To all of you who are participating in the project, thank you all for your feedback, support, and well wishing.  I couldn't do all of this without you.

Check back on this page or subscribe to it for up to date information on the Caching Tree, and feel free to leave questions or comments in the space provided below.

I hope you enjoy the new site.
